About BMP to PDF Conversion
BMP (Bitmap) is one of the oldest image formats, introduced with the original version of Windows in the late 1980s. It stores image data as a raw grid of pixels with minimal or no compression, which means BMP files are large but contain every pixel at full fidelity. A typical BMP image is 3–10 times larger than the equivalent JPG.
BMP is rarely used today for new images, but it remains common in legacy applications, older scanning software, and certain industrial or medical imaging systems. If you have received or exported a BMP file and need to share it or submit it as a document, converting to PDF is the most practical approach.
Why BMP files are large
Unlike JPG (which uses lossy compression) or PNG (which uses lossless compression), BMP typically stores pixel data without compression. A 1920×1080 BMP image at 24 bits per pixel takes exactly 5.93MB regardless of what the image contains. The same image as JPG might be 300KB, and as PNG might be 1–2MB.
Converting BMP to PDF
Drop your BMP file onto the converter above. The browser decodes the BMP, renders it to canvas, and embeds it in a PDF at your chosen page size. The conversion also compresses the image data, so the output PDF will typically be significantly smaller than the original BMP file.
Common use cases for BMP to PDF
Legacy software exports: older design tools, CAD applications, and industrial systems sometimes output BMP. Scanned documents: some older scanners default to BMP output. Windows screenshots: older versions of Windows saved screenshots as BMP by default. In all these cases, converting to PDF creates a portable, shareable document.
